I have been using my friends robyns saddle to ride darby in,,mainly walk and trot,,but even though it is as tight i a can get the girth there is still movement because her back is so round, i have been doing net searches for saddles for wide, (her back is flat ok, and she is not hurting for meals even though the amount i give her has been cut back (1/2), does any one have any suggestions to what type of saddle? Robyn lets me ride her hanivarian (sp) in a wintex pro, and it is pretty comfortable on that horse,,any suggestions,,please let me know,,
i have been looking at some ascots also,

thanks
shannon

Hi Shannon,
Max and I both ride in semi-custom Schleese Dressage Saddles which seem to fit the ponies well--The Wave model has both shorter-wider panels and shorter flaps plus an extremely wide gullet and adjustable tree. They are an investment saddle (VERY EXPENSIVE)....but at least as things change through fitness and maturity the saddle can be adjusted regularly. The Schleeses can also be found frequently used on ebay and such. I have also ridden in a Devoucoux Milady which seemed to fit well enough (it is not adjustable with respect to tree width but comes in a Medium-Wide Tree) and it was comfortable for both me and my pony. I am presently waiting on the fitter for the Schleese I ride in but have found by placing the saddle at least two finger behind the shoulder blade Im making things work for now. Also I HIGHLY recommend the fitted girths for rolly pollys----they can really help keep things secure. I hear good things about Black Country Saddles with respect to fitting our native ponies well. But again, more of an investment saddle. I know a lot of Cob riders like the older Passier Grand Gilbert version

I ride Hope with a Wintec all purpose saddle with the widest of the changeable gullets. It's the only saddle I've ever found that actually fits her. Cedar and Aidan are less round, but the saddle fit the two of them pretty well too.

For what it's worth.

Our ponies Merry and Dappes are 14.3 h and very broad in the shoulders. We have a Harry Dobbs and an HRD (both wide) that fit them. The Wintec can be made to fit but it does not fit me.
