I learned a way to stop horses chewing wood and trees. Rub Ivory soap bar on the fence or bark of the tree. It stays on through rain for a long time. Cheap, non-toxic and they don't like it. Darian Hall

Comment by Featherstone Connemaras on April 3, 2009 at 7:42pm - At my farm we have "hitch posts" that are made from real wood. Of course we have a ring we tie them up to, but the ponies still like to nibble on the posts when I'm not looking! I use hoof oil - and put a light coat on the spots they like to chew the most. They can't stand the smell! They wont even lick or attempt to chew it because it's stinky to them and I've found its a quick way to teach them not to put their mouth on wood as it will be "stinky" and probably not taste very well. I've found it works pretty well - and you probably already own a bottle of hoof oil! It's a one time thing, and you'll never have to worry about them wanting to chew again... like a child touching a hot stove!
